What Does an Examination Invigilator Do?

Invigilators work under the direction of a Chief Invigilator and assist with the effective administration of written examinations.
Responsibilities may include:

      • Reporting to the assigned examination venue at the prescribed time, which will be no less than one hour before the examination begins.
      • Preparing the examination room and arranging approved examination materials.
      • Assisting with the orderly admission and seating of candidates.
      • Distributing question papers, answer books and other authorised materials.
      • Confirming candidates’ attendance and identifying absentees.
      • Maintaining constant watchfulness throughout the examination.
      • Ensuring that silence and order are maintained.
      • Preventing candidates from accessing unauthorised materials or receiving unfair assistance.
      • Referring candidates’ questions and examination irregularities to the Chief Invigilator.
      • Monitoring late arrivals and candidates who are permitted to leave the room.
      • Collecting, checking and securely organising examination scripts and related materials.
      • Ensuring that no scripts, question papers or examination materials are left behind.
      • Assisting with the accurate completion of examination records and reports.

Protecting Examination Integrity

Throughout each examination, Invigilators are expected to remain vigilant and ensure that candidates do not:

      • Communicate with one another.
      • Copy from another candidate.
      • Consult unauthorised books, notes or electronic devices.
      • Access any form of unfair assistance.
      • Create a disturbance that affects the proper conduct of the examination.

Any suspected irregularity must be reported immediately to the Chief Invigilator for formal action in accordance with the University’s Assessment Regulations.
Invigilators must not interpret examination questions, advise candidates on the content of a paper or comment on a possible error. All such queries must be referred through the appropriate examination procedures.

The Qualities We Are Seeking

Effective invigilation requires more than simply supervising an examination room. Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

      • A willingness to work as part of an examination team.
      • The ability to act impartially and treat all candidates fairly.

Your Commitment Matters

Withdrawal should occur only in the case of an emergency, and the Examinations Section must be informed as soon as possible.
Punctuality is also essential. Invigilators must report at the time stated in their assignment instructions. Late arrival may disrupt the preparation of the examination venue and must be reported to the Campus Registrar.
