Job Description
The Faculty of Food and Agriculture invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of GHG Inventory Specialist: Bio Resilience: Nature based solutions for resilient landscapes in Trinidad and Tobago.
The project “Bio Resilience: Nature based solutions for resilient landscapes in Trinidad and Tobago” is a five-year project, funded by the GEF, implemented by the FAO, and executed by UWI. The project’s objective is “To have nature-positive development and increased food security in Trinidad and Tobago, including NbS, that halt current land degradation trends, increase biodiversity and provide resilience to climate change impacts in the long run.”
The GHG Inventory Specialist will provide technical expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, ecosystem carbon assessment and climate mitigation analysis to support the implementation of Component 1. The specialist will support the integration of GHG emissions and carbon stock data into ecosystem accounting frameworks, ensuring alignment with international reporting systems. The specialist will work closely with the Natural Capital Specialist, the Project Management Unit, national institutions and relevant stakeholders to strengthen national capacity for GHG accounting related to land use, forestry, agriculture and ecosystem management.

Tasks
Under the direct supervision of NTPC and with the support of the UWI, the GHG Specialist will be responsible for providing relevant technical guidance and support for Component 1. In particular, the incumbent will perform the following main tasks:
Review the project document and related materials to understand the project design and implementation context
Provide technical expertise on greenhouse gas accounting related to ecosystems and land use
Support integration of carbon accounting into the Natural Capital Accounting framework, in particular:
Output 1.1.2 – Pilot Land Cover and Carbon Assessment Completed
Output 1.1.3 – Increased Value Estimated for Intervention Areas
Output 1.1.4 – Data Integrated into National Environmental Information Systems
- Provide methodological guidance for estimating ecosystem carbon stocks and emissions
- Support national institutions responsible for GHG inventories and climate reporting
- Assist in strengthening national capacity for climate-related environmental data management
- Facilitate collaboration between national climate change agencies and project stakeholders
- Support the preparation of technical documentation and reports related to greenhouse gas accounting
- Provide technical inputs to project monitoring and reporting related to climate mitigation outcomes
- Lead training workshops related to GHG accounting and carbon assessment
- Design a Carbon accounting plan for project site with Methodology for carbon account
- Create Drafts and final document with requirements and standards for data and metadata integration completed
- Provide Proof of concept for validation of land cover designed
- Ensure that Data from component 1 and 2 is accessible through national geoinformation systems
- Perform other duties as required
Minimum Requirements
Education
Postgraduate degree in climate science, ecological economics, environmental science, forestry, natural resource management or a related field. A PhD in climate science, environmental science, forestry or greenhouse gas accounting is considered an asset.
General technical skills and experience:
- Minimum 5 years of proven professional experience in the agricultural and/or environmental sector.
- Good knowledge of FAO and GEF environmental and social safeguards mechanisms.
- Good knowledge of database management and information processing.
- Good relations with national institutions.
- Experience in preparation and/or execution of projects with international organizations.
- Drafting of technical reports according to UN quality standards.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work with national and international organizations, Government authorities, academia, technical experts, field workers and civil society organizations.
- Good command of MS Office tools and use of on-line information systems.
