Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching: The Case of the Southern Caribbean

(Palgrave Macmillan, 2023)

This book presents a unique perspective from an underrepresented region in the Global South. The case of the Southern Caribbean features four different countries in the region, namely, Barbados, Guyana, St. Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago, as well as Martinique, an island located just north of St. Lucia which is an overseas region of France. The volume documents innovations in learning and teaching Spanish, French, and Chinese in the case of the English-speaking countries, and English as a foreign language (EFL) in the case of Martinique. The chapters in the volume cover different aspects of language education in the Caribbean and are of particular interest to those involved in managing change in language education that attempts to mediate between global trends and local needs. More generally this book is for anyone involved in language development, from curriculum reform to materials development and from programme evaluation to the setting of assessment standards, as well as students and scholars of applied linguistics, language education and TESOL. The volume is edited by Hayo Reinders, Diego Mideros Camargo, Nicole Roberts and Beverly-Anne Carter.

Language and Competitiveness Project

The project achieved a number of deliverables, such as a tutorial DVD on Chinese Business Etiquette, recommendations for the education sector regarding preserving the bilingual competence of children whose mother tongue is Spanish, as well as the Languages for Life Secondary School Competition.
