Our Philosophy
An important part of knowing a foreign language is developing a critical understanding of target language cultures and developing an ability and willingness to engage with these cultures.
Students who enrol in the Centre’s courses are seeking to gain skills to thrive in the target culture. This means that our classes are conducted as far as possible in the target language and students are supported to develop confidence to express themselves fluently.
While pronunciation is monitored and grammatical structures taught, the focus at all times is on enabling students to use and expand their communicative repertoire in the target language.
Our Mission
Our Vision
To be a centre that is a national, regional and international centre of excellence for foreign language study and research.
Community Outreach
In keeping with its mission to promote multilingual competence locally and regionally, we are pleased to participate in activities that showcase language and culture, such as secondary school Career Days.
Our staff has engaged with students on the value of learning foreign languages at Bishop’s Anstey Port-of-Spain, Blanchisseuse Secondary School, Diego Martin Central Secondary, Mucurapo West Secondary, St. Augustine Girls’ High School, St. Benedict’s College, and at the FORMEO Expo in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
In addition to school events, the CLL also hosts workshops and language taster sessions with businesses and organisations to promote language learning and cultural appreciation in the wider community. These sessions can be hosted at the CLL or at a mutually agreed upon venue.
