The major health issue that is affecting individuals, families and communities is the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) epidemic, resulting in conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cancers and hypertension. The good news is that these conditions are lifestyle related and are therefore preventable. The aim of the M.Ed Health Promotion is to build capacity at the level of prevention to meet the demands of the Caribbean region by preparing a critical mass of regional Health Promotion Specialists to address NCDs, HIV and AIDS as well as other priority health issues.
The programme is designed to facilitate professional advancement of persons working in education, community health, community development, health education, social services, health and family life education, youth services, labour or related fields. The emphasis is on the cultivation of strong skills in developing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programmes focusing on social, economic, and behavioural determinants.
The M.Ed Health Promotion is the flagship qualification for Health Promotion training in the Caribbean. It also provides a strong foundation for progressing to research-only higher degrees in the field of health promotion, and especially doctoral research in health promotion and health and human relationships.
