Course Description

CHEM 2672 reinforces and further develops basic and intermediate laboratory skills covered in CHEM 1070. The course also introduces students to advanced techniques and skills such as advanced separation and purification techniques; chemical quantitation; reaction thermodynamics and kinetics; one step and basic multistep reaction syntheses; interpretation of spectral data; structure elucidation and chemical characterization; stereochemistry; as well as the basic analytical & spectroscopic instrumentation skills required of a chemist: HPLC, GC, Flame Atomic Absorption, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, IR, 1H NMR and mass spectrometry. The final grade for CHEM 2672 will be determined from an assessment of student performance in the following activities: pre-lab preparation, general laboratory reports /exercises, laboratory quizzes oral and written, practical lab skills and tutorial/group discussions.
