Available Degrees

The Faculty of Law at UWI, St Augustine offers two research degree options, the MPhil and the PhD. All research students must start at the MPhil and those desirous of graduating with a PhD must complete the upgrade process. Upon successful completion of the upgrade process, the student’s registration will be changed to the PhD programme.

Details on the MPhil and PhD programmes can be found in the Faculty of Law’s Postgraduate Handbook –

Entry Requirements

Applicants should ideally possess an LLB with upper second class honours or better and an LLM with merit or better from an approved University. It will be desirable to demonstrate a prior record of research through peer-reviewed journal articles, research papers, dissertations, or other relevant publications. In extraordinary circumstances applicants possessing other qualifications may be considered for admission.

Applicants are advised to check with the Faculty of Law to determine whether their proposed research area is viable.

The MPhil and PhD programmes are available on a part-time and full-time basis.

Application Procedure

Pre-application

Applicants should consult with the Deputy Dean, Graduate Studies and Research prior to applying to ensure the research proposal meets the basic requirements and that the proposed topic is viable. Potential and/or preferred supervisors should also be discussed. Failure to consult on the research proposal will likely lead to a rejection of the application where the minimum requirements are not met.

Making the Application

Applicants are to file an application using the UWI, St Augustine application portal – https://sta.uwi.edu/admissions/postgrad/application-process. Applicants are reminded that a key component of the MPhil/PhD application is the research proposal.

Post-application

Once the application is submitted, it is forwarded to the Faculty of Law where the Entrance Committee will make a decision. It is not unusual for the Entrance Committee to request an interview with the applicant. The applicant may also be asked to amend their proposal before a final decision is made.

Acceptance

Once an applicant is accepted, they will be notified of their supervisor(s) and the paperwork for registration will be processed. The Faculty of Law is not responsible for the communication of acceptance letters.
