Award Eligibility and Guidelines

  1. Open to:
      2. Researchers and innovators across Trinidad and Tobago, including those affiliated with:

        • Public and private sector institutions and organizations
        • Secondary schools (teachers and students)
        • Industries and communities
      All researchers at The University of the West Indies St Augustine, including:

        • Full-time Academic Staff
        • ASAP (Academic and Senior Administrative Professional) Staff
        • ATSS (Administrative, Technical and Service Support) Staff

     

  2. Applicants who received awards under these categories for the Principal’s Research Awards in 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions are not eligible to apply in the same category.
  3. There is no limit to the number of awards an applicant may receive, however, the same research work or the Project will not be considered for more than one award.
  4. Applicants are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of information provided in the application form.
  5. Only applications submitted using the relevant award Template will be considered.
  6. The decision of the Campus Research Awards Committee is final, and it reserves the right to verify statements made on the application form and to not award a specific category based on its merit and suitability of application.
  7. Applications should be submitted with a cover letter clearly indicating the name of the award being applied for in Word or PDF format.
  8. Applications for all award categories must be submitted  to the Research Awards Application Portal at https://sta.uwi.edu/researchawards/applications/ on or before 11.59 pm of Monday 28 September 2026. No late submissions will be accepted

Award Categories & Forms

Principal’s Special Innovation Award

The Principal’s Special Innovation Award is open to all researchers and innovators across Trinidad and Tobago, including those from The UWI St Augustine Campus, other tertiary institutions, and secondary schools (teachers and students), who have undertaken innovative research and developed a product, process, technology, or solution with strong commercialisation potential.

This awardee will receive an award Plaque, Certificate and Cash reward of $ 5000 at the award ceremony. The award recognises excellence in research and innovation while encouraging researchers and innovators to  develop solutions that address national, regional, and global challenges, contribute to technological advancement, and drive sustainable economic and social development.

Applications are invited from but are not limited to the following innovation categories:

      • Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Digital Technologies
      • Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture
      • Health, Biotechnology and Medical Innovation
      • Energy and Environmental Sustainability
      • Advanced Manufacturing and Smart Engineering
      • Blue Economy and Marine Innovation
      • Creative Industries and Digital Innovation
      • Education, Social Innovation and Human Development

Hurricane and Earthquake Alleviation Research (HEAR) Award

Inspired by the vulnerability of the region to earthquakes and hurricanes, this award is meant to encourage the research culture and innovation among all people beyond the conventional academics to find solutions in this critical area. This alleviation can be related to health, disability, financial arrangement, food security including crop resilience to wind and floods & climate smart agriculture, construction and hurricane packages but this list not exhaustive.

This HEAR awardee will receive an award Plaque, Certificate and Cash reward of $ 10,000 at the award ceremony.

The call for Principal’s Research Award titled HEAR Award is open to ALL researchers and innovators across the country including all Tertiary Institutions and Secondary School teachers and Students.
