The
University
of the West Indies hosted its first
international Half-Marathon,
a unique event in Caribbean long-distance
running. It was held on November 14,
2004 in Trinidad
& Tobago. The race featured
top athletes from the Caribbean and
around the world. Some of these atheletes
included John Muriethi Muriuki from
Kenya, Ukraine athletes Tatyana Pozdnyakova
and Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova, as well
as West Indian runners Pamenos Ballantyne,
Roland Holassie and Pauline Davis from
the Bahamas who started the race. Less
experienced athletes from all age groups
enjoyed this fun and challenging new
and secure course,
measuring 13.1 miles.
The
UWI Half Marathon is organized by the
UWI Sport & Physical
Education Centre, accredited by
the International
Amateur Athletics Federation, and
endorsed by the National Amateur Athletic
Association of Trinidad & Tobago.
