UWI HALF-MARATHON ORGANIZERS
The Sport
and Physical Education Centre (SPEC)
at The University of The West Indies
is poised to become the forerunner of
athletic development in the region.
SPEC bears the distinction of not only
being the only athletic facility of
its kind in the region but also the
only Caribbean academic facility which
focuses on the technical and theoretical
development of athletic management and
performance.
It took
over seven years for the Director of the
Centre, Dr. Iva Gloudon and her team,
to help bring to reality the vision of
a world class, state of the art centre
that can serve the rapidly changing demands
of regional sports. The result is the
Caribbean’s most modern, multi-purpose
indoor-outdoor facility.
|
For
outdoor sports, UWI SPEC boasts international
standard, full-sized basketball, futsal,
volleyball, hockey and netball courts
with high tech lighting systems to
accommodate night games. Plus soon
to be completed international standard
cricket pitch and athletics track. |
On
the inside, a spectacular open floor
plan allows for a variety of indoor
sports, large ceremonies and cultural
events. The main court area is fully
outfitted for basketball, netball,
indoor hockey, volleyball, table
tennis, futsal and much more.

|
UWI
SPEC offers academic undergraduate
degrees and Certificates in Coaching,
Physical Education, Sport Management,
Sports Medicine and a diverse series
of short-term courses and seminars.
UWI SPEC has also made links with
other similar Centres to foster
exchange of knowledge and skills
in the different dimensions of sports
development. |
“
Events like the SPEC half marathon
give our students a chance to put
their learning into practice. Eventually,
we hope that it will be our majors
who will be organising the half-marathon
and providing professional expertise
in every area of the event.”
