Between Bolsonaro and Lula: Challenges to Brazilian Democracy in the Trump Era
The Institute of International Relations at The University of the West Indies warmly invites you to attend an upcoming guest lecture titled:
“Between Bolsonaro and Lula: Challenges to Brazilian Democracy in the Trump Era”
Brazil has emerged as a central case for understanding democratic backsliding and political polarization globally. The tensions between Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva—deepened during and after the presidency of Donald Trump—highlight broader transformations affecting democracies across the Global South and beyond.
The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos, a leading scholar of Latin American political economy and contemporary South American politics. The session will provide critical insight into Brazil’s current political landscape while offering comparative perspectives relevant to students of international relations, political science, sociology, history, and Latin American studies.
Date: Monday, March 2, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
