COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an understanding of the evolution of Caribbean Agriculture, including the plantation and peasantry systems Students are given an overview of the structure of the sector in terms of the crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry and valueadded agribusiness. The multifunctional role and contribution of the sector to food and nutrition security, livelihoods, the environment and sustainable rural development are examined. The course includes a study of stratifications and social structures, as well as rural versus urban life and the role of the mass media in Caribbean societies. The course concludes with an examination of contemporary issues and an insight into the way forward for Caribbean agriculture.
