This course is designed to introduce non-law students to the relevant legal principles and regulations of environmental and natural resource law. The course is structured to highlight the relevant domestic laws regulating environment and natural resource laws and practice in the Commonwealth Caribbean. This will be achieved by examining environmental laws in several commonwealth Caribbean territories as well as the international environmental regimes governing several areas. The environmental legal principles developed in this area will be explored in a manner that gives students a solid understanding of the broader social, economic and political issues underlying the rapid evolution that is presently taking place in environmental law and policy. The first few lectures will give students an introduction to laws and legal systems and the reception of laws in the commonwealth Caribbean before other topics specific to environmental and natural resource law are introduced. The course is delivered through a combination of interactive lectures and tutorials. This course is assessed by means of two coursework assignments and a final examination.
