Brazil plays a central role in Latin America’s economy and policy today. The Minor in Brazilian Studies is aimed at providing students with the linguistic and cultural knowledge necessary to interact with Brazilian people and society.

 

We offer seven Portuguese language courses (each one building on the previous), two in Portuguese Linguistics, two courses in Brazilian culture, one in modern Brazilian literature, and one on Lusophone Studies.

 

The Minor (15 credits or five 3-credit courses) is divided into two main parts: Language and Culture. The Minor consists of four compulsory courses, each with Level I pre-requisites, and a fifth elective course (to be chosen out of 3 options), to make up the 15 credits).

The numbers in parentheses refer to the semester in which the course is normally offered.

Pre-requisites for the Minor are:

PORT 1001 Portuguese Language 1A (this is Part 1 of the Level I Language courses) (1)

PORT 1002 Portuguese Language 1B* (2)

PORT 1003 Introduction to Brazilian Culture* (1)

(*Both of these courses are pre-requisites for PORT 2003 Brazilian Society and Culture.)

An overview of the structure of the Minor:

1. PORT 2001 Portuguese Language 2A (1) (compulsory; pre-requisite for PORT 2002)
2. PORT 2002 Portuguese Language 2B (2) (compulsory; pre-requisite for PORT 3001 and for PORT 3003 )
3. PORT 2003 Brazilian Society and Culture (2) (compulsory)
4. PORT 3001 Portuguese Language 3A (1) (compulsory; pre-requisite for PORT 3002 and PORT 3004 below)

AND a choice of any of the following:

5. EITHER PORT 3002 Portuguese Language 3B (2) (optional)
6. OR: PORT 3003 Modern Brazilian Literature (1) (optional)
7. OR: PORT 3004 Business Portuguese (2) (optional)
