LING 2204 Deaf Language and Culture (1)

Pre-requisites: None


Many persons assume that the social norms of the Deaf are same as those of the hearing. As this is not so, students need to be aware of and be able to appreciate the cultural differences that exist. This course explores the cultural experiences and perspectives among persons who are Deaf. In addition, the course provides an overview of issues related to members of the Deaf community.

Method of Instruction: 2 lectures and 1 tutorial per week
Assessment: 40% in-course assessment, 60% final examination

This course is part of the Diploma in Caribbean Sign Language Interpreting and the Minor in Caribbean Sign Language, and is normally offered in Semester 1.
