MASTER OF ARTS (MA) TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL)

 

Students achieving a B+ average in the first year of the Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL may apply to upgrade to the Master's in TESOL. The MA TESOL will equip students with the knowledge necessary to engage with issues of teaching and learning English as a second and foreign language at a range of levels. Students will have additional prerequisites to those required for the Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL. These are as follows (the postgraduate courses listed below are also part of the Diploma programme):

  1. LING 2101 Language Acquisition
  2. LING 2302 Sociolinguistics
  3. LING 2402 Structure of the English Language

The Master's in TESOL consists of the courses required for the Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL, and two additional courses from the MA in English Language which are relevant to their particular specialisation and a Research Paper (8 credits) in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students will select the two additional courses from among the following:


LING 6106 The Content of Tertiary Level English Language Courses
LING 6103 Principles and Methods of English Language Teaching
LING 6402 World Englishes
LING 6406 Pronunciation and Spelling of English
