The UWI Dental School admits a limited number of local and international places per year. These places are very competitive. Because of this, eligible candidates who cannot be accommodated in the current academic year, will be offered a guaranteed place in the following academic year. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to attend an interview.

2- Co-curricular activities. 

 

Academic requirements
CARICOM Students

CSEC

The minimum CSEC admission requirement for Dentistry is the possession of passes in the Physics, English, Maths, Chemistry and Biology at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate level.

CAPE

Applicants must also have three passes in Biology and Chemistry and one other subject at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) OR the PreScience Agriculture Programme offered at the UWI School of Continuing Studies OR other equivalent certification in these subjects which is recognized by the University for admission purposes. 

Points are awarded based on CAPE results in each of the 3 subjects in Unit 1 and Unit 2 as follows:

Grade 1 = 5 points, Grade 2 = 4 points, Grade 3 = 3 points, Grade 4 = 2 points, Grade 5 = 1 point

The maximum score for any applicant is 30. The minimum total score for admission is 28 for Trinidad & Tobago nationals and 24 for all other CARICOM applicants.

Degree Programs and Transfers

Applicants with first degrees will be assessed on their CSEC and CAPE results as well as the components of their Degree programme. Graduates with components of Biology and Chemistry in their Degree will be eligible for admission. A minimum Grade Point Average of 3.5 is required for Trindiad & Tobago nationals and 3.0 for all other CARICOM applicants. Candidates are invited to apply after completing one year of the degree programme.

 

International Students

Applicants who have first degrees will be assessed based on Grade Point Average and the components of the degree programme. Students who have not written CSEC or CAPE need to have components of Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics as components of their Degree. Note that North American High School Courses are not considered. Candidates are invited to apply after completing one year of the degree programme. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Students whose native language is not English must possess a certificate showing a minimum total score of 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Information regarding IELTS may be obtained at any Trinidad & Tobago High Commission or British Embassy.

 

Co-curricular requirements

Candidates must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular activities which demonstrate social awareness, leadership experience, interpersonal experiences & communication skills, rewards for excellence and work experience.

Candidates must have been actively involved for at least 6 months in order to obtain credit for the activity and must ensure that their activities are validated by the particular institution on the prescribed application form.

Each validated activity or award is given a score of one and the maximum score for co-curricular requirements is 10.

 

Applications for the D.D.S. programme open in January and close in July for the academic year starting in September.

Applicants can track the status of their applications online via the UWI applications website.

Students will recieve feedback on the status of their application from the Faculty of Medical Sciences section of the Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs (Admissions) office following the meeting of the Faculty's Admissions Committee.

Unsuccessful candidates can visit/Email this office for further academic counselling.
