Staff Spotlight - Asad Mohammed

Asad Mohammed recently joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a Temporary Assistant Lecturer. After graduating from U.W.I. in 1998 with a M.Sc. (Statistics), he migrated to Canada and worked as a statistician in the consumer packaged goods and wireless telecommunications industries for six years, providing statistical analysis and modeling of customer and sales data. Prior to this, he had worked for two years in the insurance industry after graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics (Statistics and Actuarial Science). He has recently returned to Trinidad after living and working in Saudi Arabia for a number of years. His interests include modeling of large data sets, data mining and the application of statistics to business problems.

International Workshop on Bioinformatics: Advanced course on High throughput Sequencing Data with R and Bioconductor


Organized by The University of the West Indies, this three-day course provided an intensive introduction to bioinformatics tools used to handle and analyze Genome data. The UNU-Biolac sponsored eight fellowships to international participants. For a background on the workshop, please click here.

ICGEB Caribbean Training Programme on Bioinformatics: Application of Structural and Computational Biology in Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Agriculture of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago, WI, has hosted an international training programme on bioinformatics, entitled “Caribbean Training Programme on Bioinformatics: Application of Structural and Computational Biology in Biomedical Sciences” from 18-29 January, 2010. This training programme was sponsored by the International Centre for Genetics Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), and United Nations University- Biotechnology for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNU-BIOLAC).

Delegates from the Americas, Caribbean, Europe, India and Africa participated in the workshop.
