We are truly saddened by the passing of Dr. Lancelot Cowie, Honorary Professor attached to the Latin American Programme at the Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Social Sciences, St. Augustine Campus, from April 1, 2023. He was the founder and director of the Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean, (CENLAC) housed at the IIR (2003-2016). He also served as lecturer in Spanish for 30 years in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities and Education and senior lecturer in the Department of Liberal Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Education at the St. Augustine Campus.

Dr. Cowie contributed immensely to the activities of the IIR and The UWI in several areas, including his leadership of the Latin American Forum. His passing is a major loss to the IIR, wider UWI and Latin American diplomatic communities.

Dr. Cowie passed away on Monday June 24, 2024.
