On October 20th, 2025, the Campus signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Niterra Co Ltd from Japan and Kenesjay Green Ltd, a local Caribbean energy transition company, to launch an innovative green hydrogen initiative in Trinidad and Tobago known as the H2-TTransform Project. The agreement was signed by key figures, including Professor Bheshem Ramlal, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Dr Renique Murray, Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; Dr Graham King from the same department; Mr Philip Julien, Chairman of Kenesjay Green Ltd; Mr Tadashi Watanabe, Director of Energy Business Strategy at Niterra Co Ltd; and Mr Koichi Arimitsu, General Manager for Energy and Environment at Niterra Co Ltd.
This strategic partnership aims to develop and pilot advanced Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC) technology, designed to significantly enhance the efficiency of green hydrogen production. The H2-TTransform Project reflects the goals of The UWI’s Hydrogen Research Collaborative (H2RC), formed in 2023 to foster collaboration between academic institutions and the industry, all geared toward establishing a sustainable hydrogen economy for Trinidad and Tobago and the broader Caribbean region.
