UWI Innovation Farm: Locally Produced, Research-Backed Products
What It Is
UWI Innovation Farm is rooted in decades of agricultural research and practical expertise, servicing both the national community and the University while providing hands-on training opportunities in livestock management, nutrition and food production. Its mission is to strengthen food and nutrition security by combining scientific innovation with scalable local production.
University Field Station Milk is one of those products: a locally produced, pasteurised dairy product derived from pasture-grazed cattle at The UWI Innovation Farm. The operation brings together agricultural research, production, and commercial distribution to deliver top-quality milk to the nation. The entire milking process and the UWI Innovation Farm are generally managed by Dr Martin Hughes, the Deputy Dean of Farms for the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Sustainability.
Why It Matters
The dairy industry in Trinidad and Tobago is facing a major challenge since it currently meets only roughly 16% of the national demand for milk. UWI Field Station Milk, therefore, provides:
-
- Fresh and pasteurised cow’s milk
- A sustainable dairy cattle production system that mitigates GHG emissions
- Improved food and nutrition security for the popuation of Trinidad and Tobago
What we offer:
-
- Pasteurised cow’s milk produced under controlled conditions
- Grass fed, pasture grazed cattle, safeguarding animal welfare while ensuring product quality
- Backed by UWI expertise in:
- Animal health and welfare
- Nutrition and feed management
- Food safety systems
Competitive Advantage
The UWI Field Station Milk sets itself apart through a fully controlled, research-driven “farm to table” production system that prioritises quality at every stage. From pasture to bottle, we offer these unique aspects:
• Quality from the ground up: Our cows enjoy a diet of nutrient-rich, high-quality grass forage (primarily Brachiaria hybrid), which helps give our milk its wholesome and delicious taste
• Animal health and welfare: We prioritise the health of our dairy herds through close monitoring by trained staff and veterinarians. Our stress-free, healthy animals are key to producing high-quality milk
• Strict hygiene and safety standards: We meticulously adhere to stringent manufacturing practices, with rigorous cleaning and sanitation at every stage
• Precision pasteurisation: Our milk is processed under carefully controlled conditions to ensure we eliminate the most harmful bacteria without compromising on taste and nutritional value
• Continuous quality verification: We conduct regular laboratory testing to ensure safety, consistency, and optimal fat and protein content in every batch of milk
Strategic Partnership Opportunities
UWI Innovation Farm is working diligently to alleviate the country’s dependency on imported food, particularly milk and milk products, in the first instance. We want to expand our production to serve the entire country, and your support can go a long way to do so. UWI Field Station Milk offers several exciting opportunities, including:
- Investing in increasing our production capacity
- Expanding our processing and distribution networks
- Integrating into larger agro-processing value chains
