UWI Optical – Accessible Eye Care Powered by UWI’s Expertise

What It Is
UWI Optical is a revenue-generating initiative of the Faculty of Medical Sciences that provides clinical expertise, student training and retail optical services. The goal is to customise optical prescriptions to optimise the vision of our clients.

The clinical and research excellence of the Faculty is the foundation for UWI Optical, which serves the public and the Campus community. It was carefully designed to cater to the needs of a diverse community, with easy, ground-floor access. Optometry students gain hands-on training that serves a dual role: providing excellent service delivery and practical education. In so doing, it supports the development of future healthcare professionals.

Currently it delivers:

    • Prescription eyeglasses
    • Sunglasses
    • Contact lenses and accessories

It is anticipated that these services will be offered in the future through community-based outlets.

Why It Matters

    • Research has shown that uncorrected refractive error, issues with the shape of eyes that make vision blurry, accounts for nearly 50% of moderate to severe vision cases in the 50 years and older population.
    • An 8.3% increase in computer and cellular phone usage has caused an uptick in eye strain.
    • Many persons, particularly in rural communities, cannot afford the rising cost of glasses to correct refractive errors.
