Department of Economics

An Overview

The Department of Economics offers a one-year (full-time) and two-years (part-time) M.Sc Economics degree programme.

• The degree is made up of a core set of six (6) courses and two (2) electives, one of which can be an approved extra-departmental course.
• Examinations in Year-Long theory courses will normally be held at the end of the year, although some mid-course testing may be scheduled at the end of Semester I.
• One of the core courses will be a directed or specialized reading course that is expected to upgrade the quality of the research project.
• An internship programme may be undertaken as an optional part of the research project requirements.
• Pre-course upgrading or retooling in Econometrics and Mathematics for Economists is highly recommended .
• All Graduate students will be required to successfully read the curse ECON 3008 (EC30Q) History of Economic Thought either as part of their undergraduate offering or as an additional course at the graduate level.

Scope Of Work

The Masters in Economics programme is designed to offer participants the opportunity to pursue advanced study and to research in a particular area of specialization, while at the same time providing the technical, theoretical and quantitative tools, needed for solving economic problems arising in the Caribbean or any “Third World” environment.  In much of the programme, the emphasis is on applied work aimed at the understanding and solution of socially relevant issues. 

Entry Requirements 

Candidates seeking entry to the M.Sc. programme in Economics should hold a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Honours or above) and should possess a working knowledge of Economics.

Topics for specialized readings depend on staff interests and will be provided at the start of the academic year.  The M.Sc. (Economics) programme will carry 36 credits, 27 for taught courses and 9 for the Research Project. The degree will be awarded to students who gain at least 50% in each course and in the research project.
