Who Should Write the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT)?

  • The prerequisite to read ECON 1003 at The UWI, St. Augustine is a pass in the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) or ECON 0001 - Mathematics for Social Sciences.
  • The Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) or ECON 0001 must be written by all students who are required to read ECON 1003, unless you qualify for an exemption (see below for exemptions).
  • Students who pass the MPT will qualify to register for ECON 1003 in semester I or semester II
  • Students who fail the MPT must enroll in and pass ECON 0001 before qualifying to read ECON 1003.
  • The MPT is offered in both August and January.
  • The MPT can only be attempted once.

Registration and Payment

1. Candidates must register ONLINE ONLY using the following link: https://uwi.jotform.com/212205219782048. ​Please ensure you have an electronic (PDF) copy of your proof of payment to upload 

2. Candidates must register by 12:00noon 14th January 2026

3. Candidates are required to pay an examination fee of TT$200.00 using either of the following payment methods:

      a. at any Republic Bank branch at Account # 160 284 614 001 stating the MPT; or

      b. via credit card at https://secure.touchnet.net/C24203_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=84&SINGLESTORE=true

**Candidates are reminded to submit scanned bank receipts to the  FSS-DeptEcon@sta.uwi.edu with their ID numbers written on the receipts or stated in the email.

 

Exemptions

Students who possess one of the following within the last five (5) years are exempt from taking the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) or ECON 0001, and can go on to register for ECON 1003 after completing the exemption form and sending the relevant documentation to FSS-DeptEcon@sta.uwi.edu

  • A pass in CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit 1 or 2
  • A pass in GCE A-Level or AS Mathematics
  • A pass in GCE or CSEC Additional Mathematics
  • A pass in MATH 016 or MATH 018 (Global Campus)
  • A pass in MATH 0001 or CSSC 0103 (UWI-ROYTEC)
  • An approved equivalent subject (requires course outline & transcript to be reviewed for approval)

About the MPT

  • The MPT is a multiple-choice examination.
  • The test lasts for two hours and covers the following areas: Sets, Arithmetic, Computations, Algebra, Relations & Functions.
  • Students are advised to review past papers for ECON0001 to guide them on the type of questions that are assessed. Past papers can be accessed from the UWI library at https://libraries.sta.uwi.edu/apps/index.php/PastPaperSearch/results

Q: How many times can you sit the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT)?

A: Only once.

 

Q: If I pay for the test and then cannot sit it at the specified date/time, can I use that receipt to sit it at the next available sitting?

A: Yes, you can, but you have to ensure that you register again for the new test.

 

Q: Can the MPT be written remotely?

A: No, this facility is not available.
