About Us
The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics (DMLL) is the meeting place for teaching, learning, and research in a variety of disciplines from traditional linguistics, foreign languages, and literature to more specialized offerings like Conference Interpreting, Caribbean Sign Language Interpreting, Speech-Language Pathology and English Language with Literature in Education. Today, the Department continues to be the multicultural hub of the UWI St. Augustine Campus that encourages innovation and creativity in teaching and learning.
At the Department, we are committed to quality tertiary education for graduates destined to perform in the Caribbean space as well as globally. Our staff, comprising 35 full-time and part-time lecturers, and 12 highly trained instructors are intellectual and industry leaders who foster a diverse community and expose our students to a worldview respectful of differences. Our research agenda connects the Caribbean with the rest of our continent and with the global community.
The DMLL commands regional and global recognition. Beyond the classroom, students can find support and inspiration throughout the year in many extra or co-curricular activities/spaces like the Foreign Language Theatre Festival, The Writing Center, and the various clubs and societies available to all our students.
