Course Description 

Objectives of plant breeding; Crop evolution and genetic variability; genetic erosion and germplasm conservation. Creating genetic variability - mutagenesis genetic engineering, inter- and intra-specific hybridisation. Reproductive isolation systems and their manipulation; Principles of selection-factors affecting genetic gain, selection methods, molecular marker assisted selection and response to selection. Principles and methods of breeding self-pollinated cross-pollinated and vegetatively propagated crops. Case studies. Impact of biotechnology on plant breeding.
