PHYS 3166 Materials Science Laboratory
Course Description
This PHYS 3166 Materials Science Laboratory course addresses the practical component of the Materials Science Minor and covers all topic areas of this Minor for both Semester I and Semester II. This course consists of laboratory experiments, and/or field work and/or site visits. Physics is based on scientific principles which are tested by practical experimentation. The purpose of the Experimental Physics Laboratory course is to give students hands-on experience and to allow them to test the principles which they learn from the theoretical components of the courses. The students will be expected to perform the laboratory exercises and collect their data and depending on the complexity of the exercise will submit the written report at the end of the exercise or submit it the following week for assessment.
Course Content
Laboratory experiments and a field trip with site work are to be performed corresponding to the taught components of the Materials Science Minor. The students will be expected to perform the exercises and collect their data and depending on the complexity of the exercise will submit the written report at the end of the exercise or submit it the following week for assessment.
Goals/Aims
This course aims to:
- To facilitate hands-on training in conducting laboratory experiments, basis of decision making pertinent to applications requirements, design considerations and quality control by material scientist and engineers.
- Lay a foundation for career development of prospective practitioners in endeavours where expertise in materials science is requisite.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students should be to:
- Demonstrate an ability to use a wide range of testing techniques applicable in quantifying materials properties parameters.
- Perform best procedures for generating data using modern equipment associated with various techniques.
- Analyze, interpret and present reports on experimental data.
- Perform tasks and communicate effectively in groups in a laboratory setting.
Assessment
Students will be required to submit a lab report for each of the experiments they will perform. Each lab report will be marked and this will constitute the coursework.
