The Institute of International Relations (IIR) is deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Shridath “Sonny” Ramphal on August 30, 2024. Sir Ramphal was a champion of regional integration whose legacy has undoubtedly transformed the Caribbean’s perception of regional diplomacy and politics.
Sir Ramphal’s legal background set the stage for his impressive career. His academic background informed his approach to Caribbean regionalism and international diplomacy, allowing him to serve in a number of prominent roles, including as Assistant Attorney-General of the West Indies Federation (1958-1962), Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of Guyana (1972-1975) and Commonwealth Secretary-General (1975-1990). Furthermore, he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Warwick (1989-2002), of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) (1989-2003) and of the University of Guyana (1990-1992).
His influence extended beyond the region, as well. He held distinguished seats in several international organisations, including the Commission on Global Governance (of which he was Co-Chair) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN, of which he was President).
Sir Ramphal’s unwavering commitment to Caribbean integration and development also impacted the IIR whose mission is to enhance understanding of Caribbean international relations, apply multidisciplinary perspectives, and contribute to related regional and national human resource development. It was, therefore, a privilege and an honour that the IIR, in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Advancement, was able to invite this scholar in October 2013 to lead an open forum on issues pertaining to development and internationalisation.
This Caribbean stateman was indeed a visionary whose steadfast commitment to regional integration has left an indelible mark on diplomacy, politics and integration within the Caribbean region.
