The HEU, Centre for Health Economics, The University of the West Indies (UWI-HEU or HEU), formerly the Health Economics Unit (HEU), was established in 1995, as one of the public policy research and advisory clusters in the Department of Economics at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. The UWI-HEU's mission is to ‘make a difference’ in the health and human development of the people of the Caribbean region.
Since its inception, the UWI-HEU has grown to become a vital regional institution, working individually and collaboratively with external agencies to provide critical technical advice to Caribbean Governments for strengthening health systems, especially in relation to governance, universal health coverage, service delivery, and financing mechanisms.
The HEU’s innovativeness in filling the need for evidence-based research and technical support in the region, as well as its responsiveness to new challenges, have positively influenced the progress of countries towards universal health coverage, social well-being, and fiscal improvements, among others, through policy formulation and implementation. Our organisation’s culture is built on knowledge sharing and collaboration with national, regional, and international agencies, as well as civil society organisations.
