Course Summary

This short-term is focused to enhance the fundamental and practical skills of the participants in the field of electronics. Individuals with fundamental knowledge of electronics will have the ability to get absorbed into repair & maintenance practices and other local electronic, power and consumers electronics market. This course has the potential to prepare the students to pursue higher education at Faculty of Engineering and Physics (Electronics) by enhancing their basic skills. This face-to-face course will give opportunity to the students to get involved into laboratory practices along with theoretical study.

COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to Electricity and Electronic Circuits, Voltage, Current, and Resistance, Capacitance, Inductance, Ohm’s law and applications, Identification of Resistance (components) with color coding and other measurement techniques, Circuit design and calculations in series and parallel circuits. Identification of DC and AC current. Measure voltage and current for load and no-load, measure voltage, resistance and current in resistive networks (fixed and variable). Construct a voltage divider for a given output voltage and measures its output under load and no load conditions (this will be more of a lab exercise). Measure amplitude, frequency, RMS, Resistive and inductive load characteristics, Power in AC circuits. Introduction to various Instrumenting/Instrumentation used for analysing DC and AC systems such as: Voltmeter, Ammeter, Galvanometer, DMM, Use of DMM, CRO, Function Generator. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Semiconductors, PN Junction and Depletion Layer, Zener Diode, LED, Photo Diode, Transistors- BJT, FET, MOSFET, CMOS/TTL digital logic ICs. Introduction of Power Supply, Transformer and Circuitry of Transformer, Up and Down Transformers, Applications of Transformers, Rectification, Series Pass Regulator, Fixed Voltage Regulator, Applications of Transistors. Electrical Safety Measures, fault conditions such as overvoltage, overcurrent and ground faults, Protective Devices, Fuse, Relays, Switches.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To fulfill the requirements of skilled workforce at low cost for the local industries, this short-term course is proposed. The curriculum of the course included study of fundamental electronics circuitry, mathematical analysis and use of computational tools along with practical knowledge. The objectives of the proposed short-term course in Electronics Technology are to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the discipline's appropriate mathematical, scientific, and computational tools for addressing logical, design, or conceptual problems.
  • Provide professionals with more marketable skills in the technological aspects of electronics.
  • Understand the fundamental knowledge of calculations, approaches and technical terminologies used in electronics circuits.
  • Produce a skilled worker with the technical and scientific skills for the understanding, operation, repair and maintenance of electronics equipment.
  • Provide an opportunity to students to make their career in electronics industry.
  • Enhance fundamental knowledge of the students to get engaged in higher education in electronics and engineering.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understanding of the basic electronics circuits and fundamental laws electronics circuitry
  • Differentiating alternating and direct current circuits
  • Calculations and implementations of circuits in series and parallel
  • Understanding of several electronic instrumentation devices such as DMM, Function Generators, CRO etc.
  • Parametric measurements of electronic circuits under load and no-load conditions
  • Understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors
  • Real time implementation of semiconductor circuits including PN junction, Zener diode, LED, Photo Diode, FET,MOSFET etc.
  • Design of logic gates with use of ICs
  • Understanding of power supplies and their circuitry
  • Hands on practice of the electronics circuits
  • Maintenance of electronics circuit and devices
  • Understanding of various electrical safety measures

Entry requirements
Admission to this course would require candidates to have CSEC/Physics or equivalent knowledge and the admission fee for is TTD 2150 per student.

Target Audience
Since the prerequisite for this course is CSEC Physics / Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology or equivalent, so this short-term course is suitable for those who are interested in electronics systems, troubleshooting and maintenance of electronic systems including current and post graduate students and members of the genral public with equivalent prerequisites.

Duration
The durations of this course is 30 hours. The planned classes will be on each Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The course will start on January 8, 2024 and end on January 13, 2024.

Mode
Since this course is practical/laboratory oriented, the mode of the course is Face-to-Face with Theorictical classes from 9am - 11am and Practical classes from 11am - 2 pm
