I am in first-year. Should I apply?

  • Yes. We will only be accepting applications from students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Information Technology at the University of the West Indies.

Am I guaranteed a position once I apply?

  • No. Applicants are assigned based on the availability of positions and an internal evaluation conducted by UWI and the partner companies and academic performance

Do I need to be registered for a specific degree to apply?

  • Yes. We will only be accepting applications from students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Information Technology offered by the Department of Computing and Information Technology at the University of the West Indies.

My GPA is below 3.0. Can I still apply?

  • Yes. However, preference will be given to applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Will I get credits for participating in the internship course?

  • The internship is an approved elective in the Department of Computing and Information Technology.

           The internship period is from:

           There are two offerings

                          INFO 3609 (3-credit)

                          INFO 3610 (6-credit)

           You will be awarded a grade for the internship based on your performance during the internship.

How will the department assign a grade to the internship course?

  • At the end of the internship period, you will be required to give a presentation describing what you have achieved in the internship period. This presentation will be graded by your supervisors. You are required to submit various documents throughout the internship which will be examined and graded. Finally, a performance appraisal by both supervisors will be made. Your final grade will be a weighted average of your presentation, documentation produced, and performance reports.

Do I need any prerequisites to apply?

  • Yes. Both the 6-credit and 3-credit internship courses require Information System Development (INFO 2600) and Software Engineering (COMP 2606).

What is the duration of the internship?

The internship period is from

  • INFO 3610: May 20, 2024 to June 28, 2024.
  • INFO 3609: May 20, 2024 to August 09, 2024.

Where is the internship being held?

  • The internship will be taking place at various partnering companies in different parts of Trinidad. In light of the COVID-19 situation, there is the possibility of the internship being conducted remotely with some partnering companies.

Will I be supervised during the internship?

You will be assigned a supervisor from the Department of Computing and Information Technology. A member of staff from the company will also be chosen to be a company supervisor. You will meet virtually with your supervisors once per week. You will be required to complete and submit, prior to your meeting, a document which

  1. Summarizes your achievements in the current reporting period.
  2. Specifies the objectives for the next reporting period
  3. Highlights any issues and concerns that need to be addressed in order to accomplish the objectives in the next reporting period.

Am I expected to be present at the establishment on every working day during the internship period?

  • Yes. Your presence will be required on site at the establishment as deemed necessary by the establishment. However, in light of the COVID-19 situation, other arrangements may be made.

I am not a national of Trinidad and Tobago. Can I still apply?

  • Yes. We are accepting applications from students regardless of nationality.
  • Please note in some instances a work permit may be required

Will I get a salary?

  • No. In some instances, you may receive a stipend to help defray expenses. Please note that the stipend will be subjected to all tax laws under the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

I will be completing my degree requirements after the April/May examinations. Can I still apply?

  • Yes. However, you will not get credits for participating in the programme. Please note that the preference will be given to non-graduating students.

    • an updated CV
    • an unofficial transcript
    • a passport-sized photograph of yourself
    • a statement of interest indicating why you would like to take part in the internship course.
