1.         Course Description

This course is designed to enable students to assess the energy efficiency of small and medium premises, carry out energy audits and propose appropriate energy saving measures. The course comprises lectures, moderated working sessions and group exercises designed to allow the students to put the knowledge gained into practice. In addition, students will be exposed to the certification exam for Energy Efficiency Practitioner (EEP) by the US Association of Energy Engineers.

3.         Rationale

The whole development of renewable energy systems ranges from the need to develop renewable indigenous resources and to eliminate or reduce the use of fossil fuels in the generation of electricity. This thrust can be enhanced by the efficient use of energy. An initial step is the assessment of existing systems and the introduction of energy efficient schemes. This alone can significantly reduce the electricity demand, and this must be a first step towards self-sufficiency and energy security

5.         Course Learning Outcomes

            On completion of this course, the graduates will be able to:

  1. Illustrate the relevance of energy efficiency as a resource in sustainable energy systems within the Caribbean.
  2. Differentiate between different energy efficient technologies for small and medium scale residential and commercial premises.
  3. Access information on energy efficiency through internet, literature and personal contacts following course guidelines.
  4. Apply energy auditing methodologies and international standards to assess the energy use and energy efficiency of small and medium-sized premises.
  5. Assess the suitability of equipment for energy audits.
  6. Collaborate within a team to conduct an energy audit.
  7. Evaluate multiple solutions of different types of energy-saving measures for small and medium-sized premises.
  8. Communicate the analysis of an energy audit through a written report to a client.
  9. Apply ethical procedures to secure clients’ confidentiality.
