Dr. Sandra Sookram is Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. Prior to this role, she was Senior Lecturer in Economics at The UWI Five Islands Campus. From 2015 to 2020, she served as Deputy Governor (Monetary Operations and Policy) at the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, with responsibility for several key operational and policy areas. During her tenure as Director, SALISES received the 2025 Principal’s Award for Most Productive Research Institute, Centre or Unit.
Before joining the Central Bank, Dr. Sookram was a Fellow at SALISES. Her scholarly work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and she has supervised students at the M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels. Her research interests include public finance, monetary and fiscal policy, climate finance and disaster-risk financing, poverty and welfare, informality, firm performance and innovation, and Caribbean development. She has also collaborated with several international and regional agencies on research relevant to the Caribbean.
In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Sookram has brought her experience and expertise to a range of senior leadership roles in public service and corporate governance.
