What is Academic Advising?
  • Academic Advising is the process where the Department provides information on courses for which you must register and assists, where necessary, in the selection of courses.

What is the purpose of Academic Advising?
  • The purpose of academic advising is to help students, particularly new students, in planning, monitoring and successfully managing their chosen field of study, in relation to clear career objectives. Students are guided to accept responsibility for their learning, to be informed of the services provided for them, to access information, and to be managers of their time.

 

Where can I find the Academic Advising Schedule?

 

What is the maximum number of electives one can choose per semester?
  • You are to schedule an appointment to meet with an Academic Advisor. Also, information can be found in the Student Handbook. 

 

What is a Hold?
  • A hold is a block placed on a student’s record for failure to comply with obligations to the University. If you have a hold on your records, you may not register, or in many cases, obtain transcripts until that hold is cleared with the office imposing the hold. A hold maybe imposed for financial indebtedness to the University (i.e. unpaid tuition and fees, unpaid library fines), academic or disciplinary reasons. Examples of holds are: transcript holds, advising holds, dean’s holds, immunization holds, accounts receivable holds, etc. If you have not cleared your holds before the start of the academic year, you will be unable to register until the hold is cleared. You have registered for a BSc programme in the Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering and would like to change to another programme within the Department. What is the process?
  • Complete the Application for Transfer Form. Once the form has been completed along with the relevant departmental, medical and library services approvals, it will be processed. Once cleared you will receive official notice indicating your transfer.

 

Are there any special advising requirement for students returning from RTW or are on Warning?
  • Yes, If you are returning from RTW or on Warning, you will be required to attend a Faculty meeting with the Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Affairs before registering. Also, you must schedule and attend an individual meeting with your level coordinator.

 

If I am returning from RTW and have trailing courses, can I apply for courses in another level?
  • You must register for any outstanding course/s offered in the current semester.  If you have less than a full course load, you may then apply for courses in the next level of your programme.  Please note, that GATE funding will not be available until your cumulative GPA is 2.0 or above.

 

May I apply for Level 3 courses, if I have trailing Level 2 courses outstanding?
  • Yes, you may.

 

There are Courses in Progress on your transcript despite having completed the courses. What should I do to rectify this?

 

How can I determine whether I am on the right track in satisfying my degree requirements?
  • Complete the Degree Audit form available on the Department’s website under Student Resources and see the level 3 coordinator. You should ensure that you do this in Semester 1 of the year, you hope to graduate.
