Programme Outcomes

Programme Structure

Who should enroll?

The programmes would be most useful to engineers and managers holding responsibilities for planning, design and development, production/ operations, plant maintenance, and projects in the manufacturing and service industries.

Aims and Objectives

This degree programmes aim to provide advanced education and training for graduates in engineering, science and related areas to meet the current and future needs of the manufacturing and allied industries.

The specific objective of this programme of study is to enable graduates in Engineering and Science to strenthen and enhance their capabilities in managing engineering functions.

On completion, the graduates of the Engineering Managemnet (EM) programme should be able to:

  • Contribute to organisational efforts to achieve customer satisfaction.
  • Create effective work environments using Human Resources Concepts.
  • Develop and implement work design practices to enhance human performance.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Implement work methods to ensure quality of products and services.
  • Use Operations Research models for making optimal decisions.
  • Formulate and implement projects for change management and enhancement of organizational performance.
  • Ensure proper use of funds in compliance with financial policies.
  • Formulate and implement maintenance policies and programs for optimal use of pysical assets.

Output: A competent engineering manager capable of effective management of engineering functions and services.

Regulations

  • The general regulations of the University and Faculty of Engineering regulations for MSc degrees shall apply.
  • Candidates are required to pass both coursework and written examinations in each course offered.

For students who entered the Department prior to 2021/2022 course examination guidelines are as follows:

  • In respect of each candidate who fails the examination in any course, the examiners shall recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies whether a second attempt at the examination should be permitted.
  • A full-time candidate who fails not more than two (2) courses in a semester may be allowed a second attempt at the examinations in those courses.
  • A part-time candidate who fails not more than one (1) course in a semester may be allowed a second attempt at the examination in that course.
  • Candidates will not normally be permitted to repeat the examination of any one (1) course on more than one subsequent occasion.

For students who entered the Department as of academic year 2021/2022 will now be assessed using hte Postgraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) System.

  •  A student who fails an element of a course that counts towards the final grade (either coursework or final examination), will be deemed to have failed that course. They will be assigned the grade FCW or FWE (Fail Coursework, Fail Exam), if they obtain an ‘overall’ mark of 50% or higher.
  •  A student who passes an element of a course but does not obtain an overall mark of 50 or higher, will fall into the grade category in accordance with the mark achieved i.e., F1/F1CW/F1WE,  F2/F2CW/F2WE,  F3/F3CW/F3WE.
  • Academic standing will be based on the Semester GPA (not course GPA).
  • If a student’s Semester GPA falls below 2.0, the student will be given a warning in the first semester this occurs.
  •  If the student’s semester GPA falls below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student will be “required to withdraw” (RTW).
  •  RTW will NOT be employed for individual course grades, but students MUST pass all courses before they graduate.

Entry Requirements

MSc In Engineering Management:

BSc in Engineering or an equivalent.
Candidates with other qualifications will be considered if they have at least ten (10) years' industrial experience in the area of engineering management. Qualifying examinations may also be prescribed for such candidates.

Normally, at least one (1) year of industrial experience is desirable in all cases.

Structure of Programme

Duration Of Study

PART-TIME STUDENTS

Normally expected to complete the examination requirements within four (4) semesters and complete the project in accordance with the relevant University regulations.

FULL-TIME STUDENTS

Normally expected to complete the examination requirements within two (2) semesters and complete the project in accordance with the relevant University regulations.

The Programme consists of a set of courses grouped under four (4) major subject groups and a final project. Each course is taught over one (1) semester and carries three (3) credits and the final project carries nine (9) credits.

MENG 6508 Research Methods is a compulsory course for all MSc programmes in the Department.

REQUIREMENTS FOR AWARD OF MSC

Candidates are required to obtain a total of 36 credits, as given below, in coursework and complete an industry-oriented project, MENG 6600, equivalent to nine (9) credits.

  • MSc in Engineering Management:
12 credits from Subject Groups A and B, and 24 credits from Subject Groups C and D.

Selection of courses is subject to the approval of the Department.
