Engineering Asset Management is an emerging inter-disciplinary field that combines and optimizes the technical issues of asset reliability, maintenance, safety and asset performance with the requisite financial and managerial skills. The emphasis of Engineering Asset Management is to achieve sustainable business outcomes and competitive advantage by applying holistic, systematic and risk-based processes to critical thinking and root cause analysis decisions concerning an organisation's physical assets, including its fixed plant, mobile equipment, and it's civil, electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
This programme is designed for Engineers aiming to become Maintenance and Reliability practitioners, and is essential for Engineers and Managers who are responsible for plant maintenance and reliability including projects in manufacturing, utilities, energy engineering and the engineering service industries. On completion of the programme the Graduates will be suitable for engineering management positions, who shall be capable of efficiently and effectively managing the physical assets of their organisations.
Professor Chanan Syan, the past Programme Leader for Graduate Studies in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, describes Engineering Asset Management as "the missing link in the Caribbean".
"The Caribbean countries are in that phase of their development where the majority of the industrial and economic activities comprise of procuring , installing and effectively operating and maintaining plant and assets, and using these to produce value-added products and services locally and internationally. Effective asset procurement, operation, maintenance, reliability and disposal are the core competency requirements for the region. However, there is no capacity building, development in this critical area of Engineering Asset Management regionally", explained Syan, a professor of production engineering and management.
The present programme coordinator Mr. Kishore Jhagroo indicates that the Engineering Asset Management programme has matured to the position where Graduates are now more "Industry Ready" mainly due to the intervention of SME's, with over 30 years of field experience, in the lecturer sessions and the use of short courses, some delivered by the authors of the books used int he programme. For these short courses students are invited to bring along their managers and technicians, in reliabililty and maintenance, so that these stakeholders can all share in some of hte taught MSc material and thus together develop the critical thinking and root cause analysis capabilities necessary to optimally manage the industry's assets.
The objective of the Engineering Asset Management (EAM) programme is to provide industry with competent engineers capable of the acquisition, operation/ maintenance, and disposition of the physical assets of the organisations. This programme is designed to meet the University's Strategic Plan to provide industry with trained personnel in the area of Asset Mnagament to support their growth and competiveness.
The specific objective of this programme of study is to allow graduates in Enginnering and Science to strengthen and enhance their capabilities in engineering asset management relating to the acquisition, operation/maintanence, and disposal of plant and equipment.
On completion of the programme, participants will be able to:
The requirements for admission to the programme are as follows: -
Offered part-time and full-time.
Part-time students: Normally expected to complete the examination requirements within four (4) semesters and complete the project in accordance with the relevant University regulations .
Full-time students: Normally expected to complete the examination requirements within two (2) semesters and complete the project in accordance with the relevant University regulations .
The programme consists of twelve (12) courses and a final project . Each course is taught over one (1) semester and carries three (3) credits and the final project carries nine (9) credits. MENG 6508 Research Methods is a compulsory course for all MSc programmes in the department.

The programmes would be most useful to engineers and managers holding responsibilities for asset management, plant and project maintenance, reliability and operational efficiency, and projects in the engineering, manufacturing and service Industries. Graduates in engineering or science wishing to pursue careers in engineering asset management may also apply.
The Department may be able to provide some financial support for specific, research projects. Trinidad and Tobago nationals are eligible for support under the GATE programme.
