When will I receive my offer/acceptance letter?
  • You will receive your offer/acceptance letter once all relevant documents are submitted to the admissions department and approvals have been completed.

What does "Offer Letter is in Progress" mean?
  • Once you have accepted the offer to the relevant programme, evaluation continues pending further approvals. Once all approvals have been met, you will receive an acceptance letter indicating your enrolment within the relevant programme. Here is a guide to understanding your applications status. You can track your application status online at www.sta.uwi.edu/admissions/track.

How do you register for a programme in the Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering?
  • There are 7 steps:
  1. Get your Registration information.
  2. Register for Gate eService ID (T&T nationals if applicable)
  3. Attend Academic Advising for your programme. Check the Faculty Advising Schedule online for dates and instructions OR the Department’s Website.
  4. Select your Courses online by logging onto the Student Portal. Read the registration guide.
  5. Enroll in FEE Pay to Obtain Financial Clearance. Log into the Student Portal to register for Fee Pay.
  6. Get Your UWI ID / Smart Card.
  7. Maintain Financial Clearance

How does a student apply for an exemption based on courses completed at another institution?
  • A student must complete a Credit and Exemptions Application Form and attach the relevant course outlines from the institution where credits were attained.  This request must be submitted to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs-Admissions or to the Department’s Administrative Assistant.

Where can students access their timetable for each semester?

How do I transfer to another programme within the Department?
  • You can transfer to another programme within the Department after one year, once your GPA is above 3. An official letter of request has to be sent to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs-Admissions.

How will I know the transfer has occurred?
  • You will receive official notice from the admissions department and you can check your Unofficial Online Transcript. It will indicate the change of programme once the relevant approvals have been cleared.

What is an Advising Hold?
  • An Advising Hold is placed on your record because you require academic advising prior to registration. You must attend an advising session before the hold is removed. You can then proceed to register.

What is a Dean’s Hold?
  • A Dean’s Hold is placed on a student’s record when his/her GPA is below 2.0 in a semester.  At this stage the student is placed on a Warning for the next semester.

What is a Financial Hold / Accounts Receivable?
  • Your registration will not be processed if you are indebted to the University. If you have any questions regarding your account, you may visit the Student Accounts Office, The Bursary located on the Ground Floor, Student Administration Building.

How does failing a course affect my GPA?
  • The semester/weighted GPA is a single numerical value accounting for your performance over the stipulated period. It is calculated by summing the quality points of all courses attempted and divided by the sum of all credits attempted. Failing a course lowers your GPA. If the course is repeated and passed, the new grade is used in the calculation of your GPA. All attempts at a course contribute to your GPA

What is meant by “quality Points” for a course?
  • Upon completion of a course, you are assigned a letter grade which has a numerical value associated with it, for example A- is equivalent to 3.7. The quality points for the associated course is the product of this number and the number of credits for the course.  Hence, if you registered for MENG 1004 Engineering Dynamics (3 credits) and achieved a grade of A-, your quality points for that course would be 3 x 3.7=11.1 quality points.

How does GPA affect GATE coverage for tuition?
  • A student with an overall GPA of less than 2.0, will NOT be eligible for GATE. If the student brings the GPA up-to or above 2.0 after the semester of poor performance, they can seek to get GATE approval for the following semester.

What does a student do if he/she is placed on a Warning?
  • A student is placed on Warning when his/her semester GPA is below 2.0.  The student has to increase their GPA above 2.0 in the semester following to avoid being placed on RTW.

What is an RTW status?
  • A student is placed on RTW status after two consecutive semesters with a GPA below 2.0. A student on RTW status must stay out of the University system for one academic year and then apply for re-entry to the University (the application period is normally November to January for Full-time students.)

What are students’ options if they are required to withdraw?
  • They can seek to meet with the Dean and to outline a plan to improve their academic standing. A decision will then be made as to whether the RTW can be rescinded.

I am a returning RTW student and wish to re-enter the system?
  • Students who were required to withdraw, voluntarily withdrew or did not complete the academic programme, must submit an online application for re-admission by the stipulated application deadlines.

Required to withdraw at the end of Semester I

  • You will be required to apply in the normal application period, but no later than December 31, of the following academic year, for readmission in Semester 2 (January) of that academic year.

Required to withdraw at the end of Semester 2

  • You will be required to submit an application for re-admission and may be re-admitted after (1) year has elapsed since withdrawal.

When a student returns to Campus after he/she was required to withdraw, will their current GPA be counted?
  • If the re-entry student registers for a new programme then the GPA record will start anew. If, on the other hand, the re-entry student continues in the programme he/she was pursuing prior to the RTW then the academic record continues.

What do I do if I get a Closed Section Override?

What do I do if I get a Maximum Credit Override?
  • A Maximum Credit Override must be submitted online by stating “Yes” when prompted while registering for the course. These request will go to the Deputy Dean Undergraduate Student Affairs for approval.  If approval is granted, students will see the course in their registration.

How long will an override take to be processed online?
  • Overrides are usually processed within 3 to 4 working days. If your course does not appear on your registration at the stipulated given time, you are to send an email to adminassistant.mecheng@sta.uwi.edu
