Planetary Health Caribbean

The Project

This study is intended as a rapid-response pilot investigation, capturing the potential synergies between psychological distress arising from the emerging COVID-19 crisis and the existing climate change crisis, with a particular focus on the mental health consequences in young people. We are interested in both the range of psychological responses to the climate crisis in light of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as the degree of perceived agency to be part of working towards the world young people want to see as we “build back” from the pandemic. We are interested in the relationship between the psychological responses to these crises and action. We argue that young people (18–24-year-olds) are a key target group because they (a) may be particularly vulnerable to potential compounding effects, (b) represent a group with a recent history of strong advocacy for climate change action and may play a similar role in other public health crises such as COVID-19, (c) will bear the brunt of climate impacts in the coming decades if policy interventions fail. The study will be conducted online, data will be stored in a HIPPA compliant cloud so all records are kept confidential.

Our health and mental well-being are being challenged by environmental conditions including diseases like COVID 19.
Are you a youth who:

  • Believes in strong advocacy for climate change action?
  • Desires for the future to be “built back” from COVID-19?
  • Worried about the mental health of you and your peers?

Through participation in our study, you can be a part of the change that can reform planetary health policies.
