Pre-Health Professional Programme

This programme is designed to prepare applicants, who are currently unable to meet the requirements for matriculation, with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for the degree programmes at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS), UWI. This is a one-year (three-semester programme) spanning twelve months. Semester one starts in September, and the programme finishes in time for the student to apply to the medical, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary programmes in the following year.

B.Sc. Optometry Programme

The Optometry Programme is an undergraduate degree which spans four years, with the first three years devoted to theoretical training. MSc in Advanced Nursing
This new programme is designed to meet the critical need for leaders, teachers and advanced clinicians in Nursing. The programme is structured around the major components of theory, research and clinical practice. The concepts of leadership, critical thinking, decision making, and planned change are integrated throughout the curriculum. The graduate nursing student at UWI School of Nursing will develop specific competencies through refinement of existing professional skills, expansion of the knowledge base for practice, and development of advanced proficiencies in particular areas of practice. The programme is offered full and part-time in modular format and includes different forms of Distance Education, print, media, teleconference, computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), mentoring and preceptor practicum.

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
The Dental Programme leads to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and extends over five years. The Pre-Clinical phase spans two years and utilises a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology. The three clinical years leading to graduation, involve supervised patient management and prevention of oral and dental diseases. Upon the successful completion of the DDS degree, graduates are required to follow a programme in General Dentistry for a period of 12 months prior to certification by the Dental Council as being eligible for full registration to practice dentistry. The programme of study in Pharmacy leads to the BSc Pharmacy and extends over four years. The curriculum consists of: an integrated programme of Basic Medical Sciences; an intensive programme of Community Health; Social Sciences; Pharmacy Studies; Pharmacy Practice, Clinical Pharmacy, including Home Health Care and Outreach Programmes; and Communication Skills. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
The veterinary education programme leads to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and extends over five years. The pre-clinical phase spans two years and in the first semester of study medical, dental, and veterinary students together analyze integrated system-based problems. During the clinical phase students are expected to do clinical rotations and are usually assigned to Clinical Clerkships at the Veterinary Hospital of the School of Veterinary Medicine. MPhil and PhD in Veterinary Sciences
The School of Veterinary Sciences offers Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the following areas: Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Parasitology and Veterinary Clinical Medicine. The degree programmes are primarily by research and guided studies with limited course work requirements where necessary. These fulltime programmes extend for at least 21 months for the MPhil, and at least 36 months for the PhD. [more information]
