ABSTRACT:Cultural awareness, when applied to Intelligent Learning Environments (ILEs), contours the overall appearance, behaviour, and purpose of these systems through the use of culturally-relevant data and information. Although the nature of culture has been well-studied from sociological and ethnographic perspectives, it remains largely ill-defined from a computational viewpoint. Due to increasing interest in culturally-aware ILEs over the past five years, many questions have opened up regarding what is and what is not acceptable when designing, building, and using these types of novel learning environments.
The main goal of the research conducted by the speaker involved understanding and exploring some of the issues related to cultural-awareness in ILEs. In particular, the research explored computational approaches for studying how aspects of the socio-cultural backgrounds of students affect their recognition and reaction to culturally-charged educational content. Subtle but important differences within cultures were examined that go beyond the current “one-size-fits-all” national approach towards cultural-awareness in ILEs.
This seminar gives a high level overview of the research conducted and describes the development and evaluation of various software models and culturally-aware ILE prototypes. The presentation will describe the significance of the research undertaken and pinpoints the contributions made to the state-of-the-art in the field. In addition, the seminar will discuss the limitations and challenges encountered along the way together with opportunities for further research.
