Message From the Head

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Department of Computing and Information Technology (DCIT) at the Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

Our department stands as one of the most dynamic, high-demand, and high-enrollment academic departments within the Faculty and the University. We are proud of our reputation for delivering programmes that are not only academically rigorous but also highly relevant to the evolving needs of industry and society.

The strength of our department lies in our dedicated and well-experienced faculty members, who are internationally recognized for their research and expertise across a wide range of disciplines in computing and information technology. Our staff are deeply committed to fostering students’ academic, professional, and personal growth, ensuring that every learner has the guidance and support needed to achieve their full potential.

Our Administrative, Technical, and Support Staff (ATSS) play a vital role in the success of the department. Their dedication and services to students ensure smooth operations and a supportive learning environment, making them essential to our educational mission.
Our curriculum is carefully designed to align with the latest global and regional technological trends, as well as the expectations of industry partners. We continuously update our programmes to reflect advancements in technology and the changing demands of the digital economy. Students benefit from well-equipped computer laboratories, innovative teaching practices, and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

In addition to academics, DCIT provides a vibrant environment through its societies and student-led clubs, where individuals can showcase their creativity, leadership, and teamwork. Our signature Runtime Programming Competition is a flagship event that highlights and celebrates the outstanding programming talents within our student body.

We also emphasize experiential learning. Internship placements and capstone projects expose students to real-world challenges, enabling them to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings, collaborate with industry, and refine their professional skills.

At the postgraduate level, the department offers M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes that emphasize advanced research, innovation, and critical inquiry. These programmes are designed with varying levels of expectations, nurturing scholars who will contribute to knowledge creation, technological advancement, and the transformation of our region and beyond.
