Course Descripton

This course will focus on the structure and properties of atoms and the atomic nucleus as the basis for nuclear medicine and for many diagnostic imaging studies. Nuclear and sub-nuclear structures, nuclear reactions, the various modes of nuclear decay, as well as electromagnetic properties of elementary particles and nucleus; concepts, principles and quantities in nuclear and atomic physics with some application of quantum mechanics will be addressed. Medical physicists are expected to have a deep knowledge of nuclear and atomic physics and be able to apply the knowledge in the medical environment. This course will focus on nuclear reactions, radioactive decays of nucleus, the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with electrons and atoms. The fundamental knowledge of different types of forces and interactions will be studied. It will help with the production of radioactive materials for medical purposes and understanding of the processes utilizing these materials in medical diagnostics.

 

Coure Content

Atomic and nuclear structure and models. Energy levels in atoms and the nucleus. Interaction of electromagnetic radiation, magnetic and electric fields with atoms. The nucleus and elementary particles. Different types of nuclear decays. Principles, methods and equipment associated with measurement and evaluation of the various types of electromagnetic radiation.

 

Course Aims

To deepen the students’ knowledge of nuclear and atomic physics applied to medical physics. To teach the methods of detection of electromagnetic radiation and the principles of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the nucleus and electrons of atoms. To introduce principles utilised in equipment that produce and detect electromagnetic radiation. To train specialists in medical physics for utilizing different types of electromagnetic radiation in medical diagnostics and treatments.

 

Course Learning Outcomes

After the completing the course students will be able to

  1. explain  Bohr’s planetary model of atoms and the discrete atomic energy levels
  2. explain the liquid drop and shell models of the nucleus and the nuclear energy levels
  3. identify equipment used for various medical diagnostic purposes
  4. determine the appropriate operational equipment settings for various medical diagnostic equipment
  5. apply radiation physics in medicine to explain the operation of medical diagnostic equipment
