Shaping the Future of Global Medical Education

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) was founded in 1948 with a class of 33 medical students forming the University College of the West Indies. Approval for the university to grant degrees was granted by Royal Charter from the then Monarch of United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth. The College was granted full university status as The University of the West Indies within the next 15 years and has expanded to a total enrolment of near 45,000 students as of the 2023/2024 academic year. The medical school was the first school within The University College of the West Indies in 1948. It continues to offer the five-year MB.BS degree to this day. The UWI has a history of more than 75 years of medical school operations. Our newest school, The UWI Global School of Medicine (UWI-GSM) which offers an MD degree, welcomes students at its world-class facility at the South Campus located in Penal/Debe, Trinidad. The UWI-GSM is a school within the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the St Augustine Campus. Our South Campus will host students for lectures, library access, reading rooms, recreation facilities, and much more. Our 4-block dormitory rooms are situated at the South Campus for the convenience of attending classes. The Couva Hospital and Multi-Training Facility (CHMTF) will host laboratory sessions for students. Shuttle services will be available between the South Campus and the CHMTF.

The UWI-GSM is important in the creation of a medical artery between the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in the north and the Couva Facility in the centre with the UWI-GSM anchored in Penal. The ethos of the UWI-GSM is consistent with the new 5-year UWI Strategic Plan: The Revenue Revolution (2022-2027) as well as with the university’s new thrust into global education.
