International Blue Carbon and Wetlands Conference 2025

Blue carbon—the carbon stored and sequestered in mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and tidal salt marshes—is considered a cost-effective means to achieve positive global climate change mitigation and adaptation outcomes. Recognizing this, the St. Augustine Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (STACIE) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) is leading a technical cooperation to implement a Monitoring, Verification, and Reporting (MRV) system for mangrove ecosystems. This system provides a science-based data platform on the sequestration and release of blue carbon in participant country sites.

This regional MRV system is part of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded #BlueCarbonMRV initiative, with support from the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Blue Carbon Fund. The MRV system is being used to help monitor the progress of projects implemented under the Fund.

To commemorate the progress of this MRV system in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), UWI STACIE is hosting the International Blue Carbon and Wetlands Conference (IBCWC) at INVEMAR in Colombia. The conference builds on the recommendations by the community of practice during the Second Technical Workshop held in November 2024. It aims to expand its focus beyond the beneficiary countries (Panama, Jamaica, Colombia and Suriname) to garner further insights from the latest developments in blue carbon MRV and data sharing that were not previously considered. The overall goal is to increase the visibility and uptake of standardization of the Blue Carbon MRV system in the LAC region and increase awareness and education around the importance and opportunities from blue carbon.

Registration is free and now open for in-person or virtual attendance at the IBCWC from the 12th to 14th August 2025. The in-person event will be held at INVEMAR, Santa Marta, Colombia. Join experts, researchers, and regional stakeholders for three days of knowledge-sharing on:

  • Scientific Innovations in Blue Carbon Research
  • Blue Carbon Policies and Governance
  • Gender, Community, and Stakeholder Engagement in Blue Carbon Projects
  • Ecosystem Services of Blue Carbon Habitats
  • Blue Carbon Financing
