Approximately 1 in 8 adults have experienced child sexual abuse in Trinidad and Tobago. 

 

Break the Silence Campaign

The BTS campaign emerged our of an action-research project of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, UWI, St. Augustine. It was carried out in collaboration with the T&T Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) and ChildLine as well as the Toco Foundation, Tobago House of Assembly and Arts in Action Theatre in Education organisation.It was funded primarily by UNICEF and UNWOMEN between 2008 and 2011.
 

The Blue Teddy symbol

The symbol of the blue teddy bear came to symbolize security, love, care, comfort and relationships. The plaster across it’s heart was designed to offer a sense of hope and healing. Blue underlines the popular idiom for “feeling blue”, or feelings of hurt , sadness and despair.

Rompe el Silencio:

acabar con el abuso sexual a menores

En Trinidad and Tobago, aproximadamente 1 de cada 8 adultos han sufrido abuso sexual a menores. 

 

Campaña “Rompe el Silencio”

La campaña “Rompe el Silencio” (RES) (BTS en inglés) surgió a partir de un proyecto de investigación-acción del Instituto de Estudios de Género y Desarrollo, Universidad de West Indies, Campus St. Augustine. Se llevó a cabo en colaboración con CADV y ChildLine, además de la Toco Foundation, la Asamblea Legislativa de Tobago y la organización Arts in Action Theatre in Education. Fue financiado fundamentalmente por UNICEF y UNWOMEN, entre el 2008 y el 2011.

El símbolo del Osito Azul

El símbolo del osito azul representa seguridad, amor, cuidado, bienestar y relaciones. La curita que está en el área del corazón, es un diseño que persigue lanzar un mensaje de esperanza y curación. El color azul evoca el uso muy popular en idioma inglés de la expresión “feeling blue”, que significa sentirse triste, estar lastimado o tener sentimientos de melancolía y desesperación.

What is CSA?
 

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is any interaction between a child and an older or more powerful person, in which the child is used for sexual stimulation. The offender is usually an adult, but could also be a more powerful child.

It happens all around us, in rich homes and poor ones, affecting boys and girls alike. Most times we either don’t notice or choose not to see this truth. 
 

What is Incest?

Incest is used here to refer to any interaction between a child and an adult or more powerful relative or family member in which the child is used for sexual stimulation. This would include step or adopted relatives and extended family members.

 

 

How do I help prevent CSA?
 

Empower children by teaching them: 

  • The proper names for body parts 
  • The difference between a good and bad touch
  • That it is OK to say no, and how to say no
     

Encourage adults to: 

  • Establish clear norms of acceptable sexual behaviour and sexual responsibility 
  • Promote gender-sensitive sexuality education for teachers, parents, children and social workers
  • Help improve the social support system in the country 
  • Work to develop new equitable and life-affirming notions of masculinity and femininity

 

How do I respond to a child that discloses CSA?
 

  • Be available immediately to provide support
  • Bring a child to a safe place to talk alone
  • Focus on what the child wants to do in the moment, and help them follow-through with that decision 
  • Be nonjudgmental
  • Do not overwhelm the child with information, questions or advice 
  • Assure the child it is normal to feel upset
  • Always follow up with the child  
  • If a child discloses to another child, encourage the child to tell an adult they trust
  • Contact a counsellor or qualified person to help the child talk privately about their feelings

 

¿Qué es el Abuso Sexual a Menores (ASM)?

El Abuso Sexual a Menores (ASM) se define como una interacción entre un menor de edad y una persona de mayor edad o con mayor poder, en la que el menor es utilizado como estímulo sexual. El agresor usualmente es un adulto, pero también puede ser un menor con más poder.

Sucede alrededor nuestro, tanto en hogares de más recursos como más pobres, y afecta por igual a varones y hembras. La mayoría de las veces no lo notamos u optamos por no reconocer la verdad. 

¿Qué es Incesto?

El Incesto es un término que se utiliza en este caso para hacer referencia a cualquier interacción entre un menor y un adulto o un pariente o miembro de la familia que tiene más poder, en la que el menor es utilizado como estímulo sexual. Incluye miembros que han ingresado a la familia por vía matrimonial o por adopción, así como integrantes del resto del clan familiar.

 

¿Cómo puedo ayudar a prevenir el Abuso Sexual a Menores?  

Empoderando a los menores enseñándoles: 

  • Los nombres apropiados de las diferentes partes del cuerpo. 
  • La diferencia entre un contacto físico que está bien y uno que está mal.
  • Que se puede decir que no y cómo decir que no.

Exhortar a los adultos a: 

  • Establecer normas claras sobre un comportamiento sexual aceptable y la responsabilidad sexual. 
  • Promover entre profesores, padres, niños y trabajadores sociales la educación sexual que tome en cuenta el género. 
  • Ayudar a mejorar el sistema de apoyo social en el país.
  • Trabajar para desarrollar nuevas nociones de masculinidad y feminidad que sean equitativas y reconfortantes. 

 

¿Cómo respondo a un menor que revela la ocurrencia de Abuso Sexual a Menores?

  • Ofrecerse inmediatamente para prestar apoyo.
  • Llevar al menor a un lugar seguro para conversar con privacidad.
  • Centrarse en qué es lo que el menor desea hacer en ese momento y ayudarlo a llevar a vías de hecho esa decisión. 
  • No juzgarlo.
  • No abrumar al menor con información, preguntas o consejos. 
  • Asegurarle que es normal sentirse afectado.
  • Darle siempre seguimiento al menor.  
  • Si el menor hace la revelación a otro menor, exhortarlo a que se lo diga a un adulto en el que confíe.
  • Contactar a un consejero o persona calificada para que ayude al menor a conversar en privado sobre sus sentimientos.
