In 2013, Dr. Beverly-Anne Carter, Director of the Centre for Language Learning, was awarded TT$500,000 by the UWI-Trinidad and Tobago Research and Development Impact Fund (RDI Fund) to engage in research related to the contribution of foreign languages to the strategic economic development of local small and medium-sized enterprises.

The project was entitled, Language and Competitiveness – Positioning Trinidad and Tobago for Sustainable Development. The project achieved a number of deliverables, such as a tutorial DVD on Chinese Business Etiquette, recommendations for the education sector regarding preserving the bilingual competence of children whose mother tongue is Spanish, as well as the Languages for Life Secondary School Competition.
