The Japanese Language Speech Contest is a highly anticipated event among students of Japanese and other Asian languages at the CLL. Contest winners select from a list of prizes including tablets, free courses at the CLL, Japanese textbooks, JLPT exercise books, restaurant vouchers and more.

The contest, which was first held in August 2018, is jointly hosted with the Embassy of Japan to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Ever growing in popularity, the 2021 contest received some 18 applications, the highest number to date. More than sixty persons attended the virtual event last year.

The Speech Contest continues to receive unwavering support from its partners, the Japan Foundation in Mexico and Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited, as well as sponsorship from the Association for Promotion of International Cooperation and more recently, More Vino Restaurant.
